Son 1’s big day

It has been a busy fall for Son 1. He is doing his mandatory military service, the "boot camp" part, and that will last till next March. That’s what he gets for having two nationalities. He is making the best of it.

He spent a month working for a Christian from the Geneva church who has a painting business. Every morning, Son 1 was up before 6 AM to make a little extra money, probably for a trip somewhere.

Last Friday was his graduation ceremony where he received his BS in Forensic Science. It was a reunion time for him and the other 25 students who survived the three year program (220 started…)

We are proud of him. He did great. And he’s looking forward to the start of his Masters program in 2010.

From what I hear, that boot camp experience will mature him in ways nothing else in life will do. I find the idea of a Swiss Military somewhat interesting! Haven’t they always come down on the side of non-involvement? Not trying to be funny or sarcastic … I did not even know there was a Swiss Military. I wish the very best for Son 1 and am proud of him for being among the 25 who stayed through the 3 year program to succeed!

Hi Greg. Thanks for the comment. Yes, there is a Swiss military, airforce, but no Navy. There are the merchant marines. Their last big battle was against themselves and the Swiss have been neutral for a long, long time. But the military, mandatory, is a system which does not seem to die out very easily, even though the younger men in this country wish it would. Son will be doing 3 weeks of military service each year until he has completed 300 days. He will keep his assault rifle at home. But without bullets.
