Happy Birthday, U.S. of America
Though we don’t celebrate the 4th of July in Lausanne (the Swiss national holiday is August 1, the date a pact was signed between three cantons in 1291), many Americo-philes will be in Geneva for fireworks, hot dogs and hamburgers this evening. It is a huge celebration, the biggest July 4th party outside of the USA.
Enjoy the day off. (Is there really a day in America when everyone takes off?) Be filled with joy because of your freedom.
On our end, we’ll be working on camp stuff and Bible study preparations. It should be a good, productive day.

You have a happy 4th!
There is a place in America where ALMOST everybody gets the day off! Corning, Clay County, Arkansas USA! One of my most pleasant memories of home is of the 4th of July. In Corning, it’s bigger (or at least as big as) than Christmas. Farming country all around, crops were “laid by” by July 4th. Most of the stores in town shut down for the day. Now there is a McDonald’s and some convenience stores that stay open. The whole town and country turn out for the festivities, beginning at 9:00 a.m. for a parade. As a child, it was the most fantastic thing I’d ever seen. Absolutely hundreds of floats (I realize now that number was quite a few less than hundreds.). People riding horses, farm equipment, bicycles, the high school band complete with majorettes! The parade ended at the picnic grounds where the day-long picnic got underway. Rides, food, country bands, politicians, a “Miss Independence Day” contest (in 1967 I was Miss Congeniality!), and at 11:00, the biggest fireworks display in the country!! Oh, I left something out……………just before the fireworks, a drawing for a new Cadillac. Now, this year, it’s an F-150 Ford Pick-up. This has all remained bigger than life in my memory. It seemed that people “came home” for the 4th if they didn’t come any other time, and the town had 10s of 1000s of people. Of course, it was a mistake to go back a couple of years ago. It was somewhat smaller than I remembered, but they still do it……………….and just about everybody gets the day off..
